Dreaming

dscf0915.jpg
My epileptic and yellow Labrador Retriever Dash, sleeps and dreams of my dog Chance who is playing happily in the far away. St. Thomas, my chocolate Labrador, sleeps and dreams of the present moment, warm and pillowed head next to me.
I will dream of something wonderful too –piloting a plane into a sunset; the colorful parrot fish in Caribbean reefs that live among bright purple Sea Fans; falling asleep on a secluded Maui beach; painting outside in the springtime and eating a peanut butter sandwich; picking pasture-field wildflowers for a Mason jar vase to sit on my breakfast table; sitting on the edge of the Mesa and waiting for the sun to turn the Manzanos mountains diamond pink; walking through an Art museum where I am stilled by beauty; browsing through a bookstore and discovering a new author who will become a lifetime favorite; eating sweet cherries off the tree with fingers turned bright red from their juices; enjoying the tired that comes from a day of gardening; sitting in the airport waiting for the first sighted glimpse of a dear friend; walking down Columbus avenue In New York wearing a new turquoise sweater the first really warm day in the Spring; coming home to dogs after being away for a day’s work; asking my mother to make me deviled eggs; writing a letter on new stationary to a friend who has traveled to another continent; discovering a new song that speaks to all of me; the smell of Kenyan coffee being ground; the confident freedom I feel when I embark on a road trip; waking up rested after a good night's sleep………….

"What goes with goat?"

"What goes with goat?" my Irish friend asks. It seems she and her husband's refrigerator is now the repository for three butchered goats from a Ghanan friend with less freezer space. I suggested Jello could go with goat. "Every 3rd world country I have traveled to serves Jello," I said. The universal side dish and dessert, everything in one powder! If not Jello then maybe root vegatbles and curry sounds divine. Of course good bread and good wine should go with goat too.

World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS day. This has always been a day that I have follwed closely as a clinical researcher, advocate, citizen and now it has a deeper context after recently losing my brother to AIDS. I keep thinking about the satggering infection rates, in Africa particularly, and "knowing" the grief that accompanies such a death.
